Adam L. Leslie, and Alexander and Mrs Davidson in list of people signing testimonial for Mrs Rixon at Eden 14 June 1858

ON MONDAY, the 14th June, a few gentlemen met at the house of Mr. Rixon, at Eden, for the purpose of presenting Mrs. RIXON with a testimonial, for her uniform kindness and general philanthropy. The testimonial consisted of a handsome silver tea and coffee service (each article of plate bearing a suitable inscription), together with the following address : -

MADAM,—We, the undersigned inhabitants of Eden and the surrounding district, beg your acceptance of the accompanying testimonial as a slight acknowledgment for your uniform kindness extended towards us.

In the time of trouble, and in the hour of sickness, we have always found you ready to give your assistance, how-ever great the inconvenience may have been to yourself and family, to those who have stood in need of your kind attention. We sincerely trust that you may long be spared to reside among us.

    Eden, June 14th, 1858.

    REPLY.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,—For the splendid gift you have this day presented me with, believe me, with my whole heart, I thank you. If at any time it has been in my power to render assistance, or show any little act of kindness to any of you, I have felt that I have only been doing my duty, and the knowledge of having done so, would have been its own reward ; but it is nevertheless very gratifying to find that I have won the good opinion of those who I have so long re- sided amongst, and I shall ever cherish the esteem ex- pressed this day by you. I fondly trust that the hand- some present you have given me, so far beyond my deserts, will be an incentive to those who will bear my name after me, to endeavour to perform their duties to their neighbours.

Whatever his mood and motivation, on Monday, January 24th, 1853, William Henry Hadden set sail from Liverpool, bound for Australia on board the "Prince Arthur", a vessel of 1200 tons, under the command of Captain Charles C Sutherland and crew. He was travelling – and not at the pointy end of the craft – in the company of some 540 other passengers, and his travel diary (which bespeaks quite an educated, literate man) records a very basic diet, fuelling long periods of discomfort and boredom, as well as incidents of friction both among passengers, and between passengers and crew, which he characterized when writing home as “103 days of fighting, drunkenness and mismanagement”.

This lithograph depicts the Australian settlement of Twofold Bay. The whaling town was established by Benjamin Boyd in 1843 and consisted of several buildings, a jetty and a number of moored boats. The large vessel moored in this picture is believed to represent Boyd's yacht the WANDERER. The print was drawn by the artist in England after she visited a friend in Twofold Bay. [Maritime Museum]

LESLIE John - not sure if one of ours.
STEALING A WATCH. John Leslie (on bail) was charged with stealing a watch from Benjamin Besse at Cooma on 28th August last ; there was a second court of receiving. Mr. H. Dawson instructed the Crown Prosecutor. Mr. Bennett (instructed by Mr. Crang) defended prisoner. Jury : Robert H. Jackson, D. McGre- gor, R. Goodwin, A. Llewellyn, W. H. Weston, D. Haining, H. Goodwin, M. Engleman, W. H. Evenis, John Neill, Henry Dyball, Patrick Manning. The Crown Prosecutor briefly related the circumstances of the case. Constable Charles Paske, stationed at Cooma, sworn : I produce a watch I got from prisonor after his arrest. Benjamin Besse, photographer, resid ing al Bombala, sworn : I was in Cooma on Saturday, 28th August; the watch was not my property then ; it was after- wards presented to me by Mr. Frederick Clark; the watch produced is the one ; prisoner was arrested next day ; I had too much to drink, and went to sleep in a room at O'Rourke's hotel ; I went to the coach as it was leaving Cooma on Saturday night; I went home, woke up about half-past 7 on Sunday morning, and found my watch gone ; prisoner was drinking with me. To Mr. Bennett ; I had a pretty good night; I recollect assisting some one to get on the Bombala coach ; I had a great many drinks that night ; I do not recollect clambering on the coach ; I dare say I was talking to prisoner about a horse: do not know how I got home.

To Crown Prosecutor : I identify the watch by its general appearance ; it has no mark. Frederick Clarke was called, but did not appear. Richard Maloney, sworn ; On Sunday, 28th August, I was living at O'Rourke's hotel ; I was up early ; I picked up a watch similar to the one produced ; prisoner was alongside of me. I said,

"Hallo, what's that," and prisoner said "That belongs to me ;" prisoner made a snatch at the watch, took it from me, pulled the guard off, and put the watch in his pocket; he told a man named Rowe the ribbon belonged to a girl's hair ; he then walked away with the watch. To Mr. Bennett: Prisoner was not sober; there was a good amount of drinking on the Saturday night, and I had a little drink ; I was in a safe place last night ; I slept in the lockup, but was right enough ; I walked up as a person ought to do; the ribbon on the watch caught my foot, and was on the ground, outside the hotel, near where the Bombala coach started from.

To Crown Prosecutor : I had been in bed and sober when I got up ; pri soner could walk and talk all right, and seemed lo know what he was doing. To Mr. Bennett: Prisoner had a watch an I chain on him, Constable Paske, recalled : I arrested prisoner on Sunday, 28th August, between 10 and 11 in the morning, at Hanley's bar ; I told prisoner he was charged with stealing a watch ; Mr. Besse was with me ; prisoner said be knew nothing about the watch ; he understood what I was saying to him, and walked up with me to the lockup; on to the way to the lockup, prisoner put his hand in his trousers pocket, and said "If I give you the watch, you won't lock me up;" I said, "If you have got the watch, you had better give it up;" prisoner said "That's the d_____d watch" and handed me the one produced. To Mr. Bennett: Before this, I believe prisonor had been drinking heavily ; prisoner had a silver watch and chain on him. To Crown Prosecutor: It was a hunt- ing watch, not like the one produced. Frederick Clarke, photographer, gave evidenoe as to lending and giving the watch to Besse. Charles Reed, mailman, sworn, gave evidance of prosecutor and prisoner being at the Bombala coach when it started on the Saturday night; both were drunk; Besse got upon the coach, and was driven to Thornton's, where he lived.

Geo. W. Spring, sworn : Prisoner's character is good, but he is given to excessive drink ; he is in the employ of Mr. Beuseville, manager for Messrs. King and Co John Hanley, publican, sworn : Prisoner was suffering from drink when the constable came to arrest him ; prisoner had plenty of money with him, and he left £12 or £18 with me on that occasion ; I believe the prosecutor had been drinking. To Crown Prosecutor: Prisoner looked like a man who wanted a drink; he could walk and talk, and make himself understood, To Mr. Bennett: He walked in a staggering way; I could not swear whether he knew what he was doing. Mr. Bennett addressed the jury, mak- ing a most eloquent appeal, and at the conclusion there was slight applause. His Honor summed up, and reviewed the evidence. By declaring ownership of the watch, and walking off with it after it had been found, prisoner would be guilty of stealing. Prisoner denied having the watch when spoken to by the arresting member of the force, but after wards produced it. If prisoner was so drunk as to be incapable of forming an intention, that would he an answer, but the evidence was that prisoner had an hour's sleep after leaving the coach. The jury retired at 12 minutes past 3, and returned into court at half-past 3 with a verdict of Not Guilty Before the jury came in, Mr. Bennett asked His Honor to reserve the points that there was no evidence on the first and second count.

James Leslie, a Presbyterian, remembered Mr. Bousfield explaining "infallibility"— forgot what he said it meant, but remembered him telling them the Pope was despotic, and heard him say that we ought not to pay money to anyone for praying for the dead. He once said we ought to obey our parents when young, and that when we grew up we should choose our own religion.
Cross-examined by Mr. Bousfield, he said, "You told those who thought it right to pay money to pay for the dead to hold up their hands"— I meant this when I said "I heard him say we ought not to pay anyone money to pray for the dead."

TO P. J. MURRAY, Esq., Police Magistrate, Eden, Twofold Bay.—Sir,—We, the undersigned inhabitants of the Police District of Eden, beg respectfully to express
our deep regret to learn that it is your intention to leave this district.
We trust, however, that this determination is not unalterable, and take this mode of conveying to you our confidence in your integrity, impartiality, and independence as a magistrate, and our entire approval of the manner in which you have performed your onerous public duties.
We would urge upon you to reconsider your proposed change, and sincerely hope to enjoy your valuable services amongst us for a long time to come.

[signatories include A L Leslie, Solomon Solomon, Alexander Davidson, James Rixon, Joseph Walpole Silk]

    Reply.
GENTLEMEN,—I thank you sincerely for the warm expression of your confidence so flatteringly conveyed in the above address ; it is gratifying to find that my duties have hitherto been performed so satisfactorily as to merit your entire confidence.
Though the application for my removal emanated from myself, your kindness made me almost regret the step I had taken ; but as it is now decided that I am to continue your police magistrate, I trust in years hence to merit that confidence which only can be retained by a just and impartial discharge of the duties of my office, and when on the Bench viewing the poor shepherd and the owner of thousands of broad acres as equals.
Again thanking you collectively and individually,
I am, Gentlemen, your faithful servant,
    P. MURRAY, Police Magistrate

Obituary of SOLOMON Solomon of Eden Twofold Bay - links to Leslie and COHEN families.

The death is announced of Mr. Solomon Solomon, of Eden, Twofold Bay, as having occurred at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. David Moses, "Elstrie," 186 Forbes-street, Darlinghurst. The sad event follows the death of Mrs. Solomon by a few days, and no doubt the bereavement after 60 years of wedded life and the long journey necessitated by the funeral hastened the end, remembering the deceased was in his 79th year. Mr. Solomon was widely esteemed and respected, and leaves four daughters, three sons and numerous grand children to mourn their loss, Mr, Solomon was a brother of Mrs. L. W. Levy, who is at present on a visit to Liverpool, England. The death of a good citizen is a public, calamity, the death of a pious man is a direct loss to the Community. Little did we think when announcing the death of Mrs. Solomon, in our last issue, we should so soon be called upon to chronicle the demise of her good husband which occurred on the 12th inst., and within six days the two funerals had taken place.
The late Mr. Solomon Solomon died at the age of 79 years, within two months of celebrating his Diamond wedding. Full of years, highly respected and deeply honoured by an ever increasing number of friends, he passed to a higher and brighter life, hand in hand with his faithful wife, to the throne of his Heavenly Parent, blessed in his last hours by the ministering care of his daughters and grand-daughters who stood around his bed and heard his last awe inspiring words which were," How beautiful are our prayers," and passed away without a struggle or a pang, to Life Eternal. He was justly called and known as the ''King of Eden" for every one looked up to him for advice and help, and cheering hopeful words fell from his lips and inspired hope and comfort. He was one of our oldest Magistrates, member of the Land Board, Returning Officer, and head of every public function that has taken place in the Eden district for the past thirty years. His public life was faultless and commanded the deepest respect, the poor and unfortunate loved him as a father and the influential vied with each other to do him honour.
As a member of the Jewish Faith, he was a staunch supporter of religion, in the face of all difficulties, his place of business was kept closed on Sabbath and Holydays, his home was the sacred temple of domestic worship and every sacred observance was carried out in minute detail. Happiness, contentment and affection reigned therein and two beautiful lives have ended leaving for all time an example behind them of how good people can live and should die.

The death of Mr. Solomon Solomon J.P. , which unexpectedly occurred at Sydney on Tuesday in last week, removes from our midst the familiar figure of one of Eden's oldest inhabitants. The deceased gentleman had for many years been carrying on business extensively as a storekeeper in this town, and he was widely known throughout the Southern Monaro and South Coast districts. On every side is expressed profound sympathy with the bereaved members of the family.

The evidence against John Beatly for uttering a forged cheque, the particulars of which I gave you in my last, was completed before the Bench here on Tuesday by the evidence of Fitzmaurice, the bookkeeper at Yandilla, who deposed that he received from Mr. Gore a cheque for £3 4s 5d. that being the amount due to him for sheep washing, and that the cheque produced in court was the same cheque, but that the three had been altered to thirty in the pounds. As two witnesses had proved that the prisoner had presented the altered cheque to them in payment for goods, the case was considered clear, and he was fully committed to take his trial at the next sittings of the District Court to he held here on the 30th November.
