LIST PURPOSE: This list is a timeline for Sydney publishers / lithograph printers Allan and Wigley (A&W). It focusses on artistic publications, such as prints and letter papers. (A&W also printed very many sheet music and plans (Trove maps) that aren't listed.) It also includes other items of interest such as A&W's business activity in importing lithographic equipment and seeking staff. A prominent outlet for A&W's printing was J. R. CLARKE, music seller, 205, George-street.
Appearing near the top of the list are some collections of A&W works. Other items tend to be in chronological order. The list is part of my ongoing working notes. It is incomplete and will likely always be so. Currently under construction 13 March 2020.

    Major events:
1855-01-01 Allan & Wigley formed, 23 Bridge Street
1858-07-07 Allan & Wigley move to 297 George Street
1858-09-07 illustrated letter paper published including harbour views - 24 images
1867-12-04 Allan & Wigley partnership dissolved

Sydney and its Surrounding Scenery. — The first part of a series of views in Sydney and its vicinity has just issued from the establishment of Messrs. Allan and Wigley. There are six sketches in all, namely: a view of Government House and Fort Macquarie from the outer Domain, St. James Church, approach to Manly Beach, the office of the Sydney Morning Herald, Pyrmont Bridge (as it will be when completed) from Erskine-street, and the Steam Ferry North Shore. They are lithographed and printed upon warm colored tinted paper in a most beautiful and finished style, and have fully carried out the spirited designs of the artist S. T. G.— Mr. Gill—We have before had occasion to make most favourable mention of this gentleman's talent, and the present affords another opportunity of awarding similar commendation. The sketches are not only remarkable for fidelity, but for the artist like manner in which the fore grounds have been treated, and the aptness with, which each has been chosen to aid the particular subject. Even that sombre mass of building—the office of the Sydney Morning Herald with the large masses of building adjoining it—has been relieved of its ponderosity by the introduction of groups of figures, cabs, horses and other enlivements, capitally drawn and with that distinctness so desirable but so frequently neglected by the dashing sketcher. These remarks will also apply to those of St. James' Church, Pyrmont Bridge and the North Shore Ferry, the last of which reminds us forcibly of Harding. It is excellent and has given value to the city in the distance, by rendering its long lines of bricks and mortar positively picturesque. These sketches are done up in tinted cover appropriately illustrated ; in fact, there is a perfect completeness about them, which calls for most extensive public patronage, a call which we cannot doubt will be fully responded to. Works of art like these it would be culpable to neglect.

THE GRAND NATIONAL CRICKET MATCH.—A well executed and spirited coloured print of this exciting event, has just been issued by Messrs. Allen and Wig- ley, lithographic printers, from their establishment in Bridge-street. It is from a sketch by Mr. J. Fowles, drawn on stone by Mr. S. T. Gill, and is intended as a memorial of the match played in the Outer Domain on the 14th instant, and two following days, between the eleven of New South Wales, and eleven of Victoria. In the picture now before us Mr. Fowles has been exceedingly happy, not merely in catching and transferring to his sketch a truthful idea of the na- tural scenic beauties of the particular part of the Domain on which the match came off, but in the ani- mation with which he has invested the players, and the easy, life-like grouping of the assembled spectators —objects more frequently sought after than attained. Nothing could be more effective than the distant back- ground, stretching beyond the Botanic Gardens to the North Shore, with the sparkling waters of Port Jack- son flowing between. It is a fine bit of perspective, and displays to much advantage the talent of the pain- ter in that most difficult branch of his art. Amongst the flags of all nations flaunting in the breeze near the centre of the cricket ground on the East, we can dis- tinguish the Hawaiian flag of the unfortunate brig Primo, which foundered at sea on the morning of the 24th not many hours after she left this port. The print is respectfully dedicated to the gentlemen who played the match, by Mr. J. Fowles, and we can hardly doubt that numbers who witnessed the game, as well as those more actively engaged in it, will pos- sess themselves of copies of it.

NEW LITHOGRAPHIC VIEWS.—A new series of six views, delineating the mast prominent features of Port Jackson, is in course of publication. The drawings are specially made by Mr. Thomas, and lithographed by Messrs. Allan and Wigley. The first, the only one at present issued, is a beautiful view of the Heads, taken from the high ground between the lighthouse and the gap—presenting in a bold and graphic manner the entrance to this magnificent harbour. The publication is under the auspices of Mr. Clarke, bookseller. These views can be so rolled up as to be posted home, at a trifling cost, without injury.

    ARTIST: S.T. Gill
Pictorial Letter Paper.—Messrs. Allan and Wigley are about to issue a series of illustrations, depicting a number of local and colonial scenes to which both those who have adopted New South Wales as their home, and those who claim it as the land of their birth, must attach considerable interest. The series, when complete, will comprise twenty-eight views upon good post quarto paper, the whole of the sketches being judiciously chosen and admirably drawn. They are for the most part street scenes, and marine views, with sketches of prominent picturesque objects of nature, and public edifices. No mention need be made of the merits of the drawing, which was entrusted to Mr. S. T. Gill, whose ability in seizing and depicting the beautiful with the eye and hand of an artist is well known to the public ; but it may be deserving of notice that the lithography, which is the work of the publishers themselves, is of more than ordinary excellence, the whole being printed with that softness of shadow, yet clearness of outline, which is often wanting in steel and copper-plate engravings. Eight of the above-mentioned series have already appeared.

Mr. S. T. Gill, whose reputation in every branch of his art is now so thoroughly established, has cleverly drawn on stone a lithograph, "No. 1, The Meet," representing a bush party preparing to go out kangaroo hunting in the interior of Australia. This picture, which is of a tolerably large size, is carefully printed on good paper, by Messrs. Allan and Wigley, of this city. The rude wooden hut in the wilderness, slim dogs, and strong, swift horses, with the colonial Nimrods and their attendants, form altogether a very pleasing and lively group.

Kangaroo Hunting.—Under this head Mr. S. T. Gill has published three very graphic illustrations of bush life in Australia. The series consists of three plates, "The Meet," "The Chase," and "The Death," and each tells its own tale with all the force that the artist's pencil could possibly convey. We have before had to notice the works of this very clever artist, (the S. T. G., whose numerous characteristic sketches must be familiar to every examiner of the Sydney print shops), more particularly in reference to that very beautiful work "Victoria Illustrated," the sketches for which were entirely from his pencil. As a work of art the sketches now before us are well
worth the price asked for them, whilst, as colonial productions, conveying a true picture of one phase of life in the bush, they are beyond all price.

ABBOT GREGORY.—Messrs. Allan and Wigley have just published a very beautifully-executed and truthful lithographed portrait of the Right Reverend Abbot Gregory. It has been taken from a photograph by Mr Dalton, and has been drawn on stone by Mr. E. Thomas. In every respect, both as a work of art and as a strikingly accurate likeness of the penon represented, it is one of the best colonial productions of the kind which we have seen. The Abbot is represented in the vestments of his clerical rank, and with chain, cross, and ring.
