A memorial to Sidney Webb memorial (1844 - 1920) was unveiled on Sunday, February 20, 1955 by Sir George Knox. The memorial was organised by the Narre Warren Progress Association. It was designed by 'Mr Smith' - I have no more details about him. It was located on the corner of Webb Street and the Princes Highway, in line with the avenue of oaks that Sidney Webb planted in 1890.

THOSE wonderful old oaks that line the Highway at Narre Warren and are so much admired in the summer, are 63 years old. They were planted by Mr. S. J. Webb, 63 years ago, and today stand as a monument to him. The Berwick Shire Council supplied him with the timber for the guards and Mr. Webb got the trees from Mr. Noboelius, planting them with the assistance of Mr. Dunkinson. It has been suggested that as the trees are such a landmark, a plaque recording their origin should be erected. Already Cr. Geo. Rae has been promised a donation of £5/5/- towards this. Are any others interested?

It was reported that the association was making its own arrangements for a Webb Memorial stone pillar to be erected on the highway near Narre Warren’s famous oak avenue. And with the possibility of the highway being widened, the association urged that if this should ever come about, council should take steps to preserve the beauty of the avenue.

Discussion about the location of the plaque.....Cr. Rae said he understood the memorial was already completed, inscribed and ready to place in position. ....Crs. Rae and Robinson pointed out that the inscription was so worded that the stone really needed to be put on the highway where the trees are. The engineer said that this was no fault of council’s. It had not given permission for the memorial to be proceeded with.

Cr. G. Rae reported that the Berwick Council was, not recommending to the C.R.B. that the Webb Memorial stone be placed in the line of oaks on the high-way, as it in possible that these trees may have to be removed in five years time. However, the district is still of the opinion that this is the logical place for it and the Association decided to ask the council to recommend that it be sited there until such time as the trees are removed. The stone has already been purchased and inscribed.

NOW a note for the Berwick Council. Your Dandenong counterparts wanted our Cenotaph to stay in the main street after reconstruction. The C.R.B. registered a “formal” objection to this, which was duly noted. Our Cenotaph is now in the main
street! You want the Webb Memorial on the highway. C.R.B. have registered their “formal” objection. The next move seems obvious.
