How significant was/is the White Rose group in Germany?

My main archival collection I have researched for this question, is the German Resistance Memorial Centre, as here is where I got all six of the White Rose leaflets. Reading these helped me analyse how the White Rose group aimed to achieve freedom. The leaflets also show how significant the White Rose still is today, as what was written is still relevant to today's society and can be used in other types of resistances they are encourage people to stand up for what is right.

I have also looked at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Germany, the university in which the White Rose movement was formed by fellow students, these sources include 12 and 13. This online source describes what the movement was, who was involved, how it started and particularly its significance to Germany, even the strong significance it still holds today for German people. The White Rose movement gave people a sign of hope, the fact that it was formed by young university students also shows that the young generation of Germany will stand up for what it right and fight against Nazism.

My other primary sources are newspapers articles published years after the execution of the people from the White Rose group. They are significant to my research question since they are published after the movement, showing that people were still talking about. The newspaper articles show us that people still referred to the courage of Hans and Sophie Scholl, when they were in times of doubt they thought about the courage of these young Germans.

My sources are relevant to my research question, as they are evidnce of the strong significant that the White Rose group holds, as we can see later generations of university students gained the courage to stand up for something, as they are inspired from courage that the White Group had.

Pierach, A. Claus. 'Hans Scholl and the Weisse Rose: An Aspect of Medical Resistance During the Third Reich'. John Hopkins University Press, vol. 40, no. 2 (1997), pp. 274-2979.

I have chosen this as my high quality academic secondary source as it does a deep analysis of the White Rose, and the significance it still holds years after the events. It is a high quality academic secondary source as it is published by the John Hopkins University Press. This journal article looks at the White Rose movement as a “medical movement”, as Hans and Sophie School were both medical students, they had a strong belief in medical justice. This article is relevant to my research proposal, as it also discusses how significant the White Rose movement was, and still is, and how it has a deep impact on German people in their fight for freedom.

    1st Primary Source:

The six White Rose leaflets are one of my most significant primary sources, as we can read them to get a full understanding of what the White Rose group was trying to achieve, and how they attempted to get people to join them in their fight for freedom. These leaflets tell people that what Nazi Germany is doing is wrong, we the must stand up against them to fight for their freedom, the leaflets are inspiring in helping people gain courage, as most were scared. These leaflets are significant to my research question as by reading them I can see exactly how the White Rose group encouraged people to join them. they also help me make my argument that the White Rose group is still significant, as the leaflets are still significant today, and can be helpful in any kind of resistance.

    2nd Primary Source:

This newspaper article published in 1966, 23 years after the execution of the White Rose members. This newspaper article is discussing how the White Rose group has been “re-founded” by Munich students, who are fighting against the National Democratic Party. This newspaper article is relevant to my research question as it directly shows how significant the White Rose group was, the fact that students re-formed it to help them in another type of crisis, shows how versatile it was. With that, it helps argues my point that the White Rose group ideals and values, can be used in any kind of resistance, in this case, resisting against the right-wing parties.

    3rd Primary Source:

This newspaper was published in 1958, it is talking about student protests that were happening at the time. It refers to Hans and Sophie Scholl, and suggests that they have given other university students the courage and bravery to protest what they believe it right. The article also mentions that the student curate Adolf Sommerauer, defended the students, we could see this as his bravery being encouraged by the university professor that was involved in the White Rose group. This article is relevant to my question as it shows the bravery of university students and professors, has encouraged later students and professors to stand up for what they believe in.
