    Edith Isabella Brown (1864 - 1946)
Artist (Painter), Artist (Draughtsman), Artist (Ceramist)
Edith Isabella Brown was the sister of Ethel Maude Brown. Both women were students at the Sydney Technical College in the 1890's. A contemporary of theirs was Gertrude Brown. Both Gertrude and Edith took up teaching positions at the college. In order to resolve the confusion between Gertrude and herself it has been suggested that Edith I. Brown modified her name using Bell-Brown. Bell was a reference to one of her grandparents. For that reason there are a variety of versions of her name in the press of the time and on sites these days as well :
Also known as Edith Isabella Bell-Brown, Edith J. Brown, Edith J. Bell Brown, Edith Ball Brown (misspelling), Miss E. I. Brown, Edith Bell Brown, Edith Bell Brown, also Edith I. Brown.

Edith's parents' marriage was recorded in the Empire of 1862 : BROWN-EDSON.-On the 10th July, at St. Jude's Church, Randwick, by the Rev. Stanley Mitchell, John Brown, third son of Captain Brown, of Melbourne, to Eliza Charlotte, eldest daughter of Mr. Edson, of Randwick."

"Edith Isabella (Bell) Brown, was born in Surry Hills, Sydney to John Brown and his wife Eliza Charlotte (nee Edson). From 1894 to 1926, Edith worked as an art teacher at Sydney Technical College. As an artist, she was known for her china painting, earthenware, and porcelain."
Reference: Reymond, M.B. "Brown, Edith" in Australian art pottery, 1900-1950 / editors, Kevin Fahy ... [et al.] ; essayist, Glenn R. Cooke ... [et al.] ; photography, Andrew Simpson. Sydney : Casuarina Press, 2004

"Edith J. Bell Brown b. 1864 Also known as Edith Isabella Brown, Edith J. Brown, Edith Ball Brown, Miss E. I. Brown, Edith Bell Brown, Edith Bell Brown. Artist (Painter), Artist (Draughtsman), Artist (Ceramist)

A sketcher of early buildings, drawing teacher, she taught model drawing in Sydney in the early twentieth century. Bell-Brown also painted on china and produced pottery work in the early 20th century. She is known to have exhibited twice with the Society of Arts and Craft of NSW 1913-14."

In 1881 Edith and her sister Ethel Maude moved to 39 Glenview-street, Paddington.

In 1894 both Edith and her sister Ethel are mentioned in SYDNEY TECHNICAL COLLEGE AND SCHOOLS. EXAMINATION PASS LIST, 1894. : "STILL LIFE. -- First grade : Edith L Brown, Second grade : Ethel M. Brown, Ida Blake, Mabel C. Malfey, Mary A. Slade, May Hayes, Louise Sykes."

In 1895 her name appears in Technical College. ANNUAL PRESENTATION OF PRIZES : "1895 : Modelling, first year. — Edith J. Brown, Louisa Spark."

In 1897 her name appears in the "TECHNICAL COLLEGE AND BRANCH SCHOOLS. EXAMINATION PASS LIST, 1896." : "Life Drawing -Second year- First grade Edith I Brown".
Also that year she was involved in the social committee of the Tech : "The picnic committee of the Technical College, Ultimo, entertained a number of their friends at a social: on Saturday evening. The chairman of the committee, Mr. J. .R. -Wright, presided, and there were about seventy ladies and gentlemen pre sent - The social took the form of a supper and drawing-room entertainment. The - unpropitious state of the weather prevented many guests from attending. Musical selections and sentimental and humorous songs and recitations were contributed by Misses E. J. Brown, M. Adams, Grace Beach, Prince, Vand M. Edwards, Messrs. Li. Warton, G. Macintosh, J. Hamilton, C. Clayton, Rainbow, A. G. Reid, and Collins. Miss Edith J. Brown acted as accompanist. The supper and concert rooms were handsomely decorated with flowers and works of art"

In 1899 Edith's name appears in the Gov't Gazette : "Department of Public Instruction. - Sydney Technical College; Miss Edith J. Brown, to be engaged to give an extra lesson each week in freehand drawing."

In 1900 Gertrude Brown and Edith receive prizes in the same year .... similarities in names is suggested for the change to Bell-Brown : Gertrude E. Brown, china painting; Edith I. Brown, landscape painting; "

In fact in 1914 the Art Gallery bought a peacock vase for their collection as mentioned in this article in The Sun : "Miss Moroney and Miss Hirst are showing delightful pottery ware, and Miss Florence Lelst's bowl ornamented with gum leaves, and tall peacock vase by Miss Bell-Brown (bought by the trustees of the Art Gallery), are splendid examples of trie work women have been doing."

Again in 1916 the Art Gallery bought some of her work as mentioned here : "the Art Gallery trustees came along and singled out the work they liked the best. Miss Eirene Mort got most of the prizes for her designs. Miss Elya Josephson, Miss Bell Brown, Miss Mullens and Mrs. Samson being also honoured by the Art Gallery buyers."

In 1929 they moved to MONA road, Darling Point. EDITH ISABELLA BROWN, late of 23 Mona road, Darling Point, spinster, deceased

BROWN -February 4 1946 at her residence Greycliffe 27 Mona Road Darling Point Ethel Maud beloved daughter of the late Jonn and Eliza Charlotte Brown and loving sister of Edith Brown.

A watercolour by her is also in Rose Scott’s collection (ML PXB 190). A drawing teacher, taught model drawing ('the most useful of all the elementary courses of drawing’) at day classes at the Dept of Art, Sydney Technical College, c.1909 [1894-1926 according to Mitchell Library records]. Also worked as a china painter, called 'Edith J [sic] Brown’, painted china etc. c.1913. She has exhibited with the Society of Arts and Crafts of NSW in 1913 and 1914. Presumably also the Miss E. Brown listed in Sands 1910-12. This entry is a stub. You can help DAAO by submitting a biography. ...
