Australian extension to Library of Congress Subject Headings

Australian geographic subdivisions

Our practice is to include Australia in the countries which are subdivided by first order political division. When subdividing topics by Australian geographic places, subdivide directly through the relevant state or territory, ie

Family--New South Wales--Sydney

Nationalities in Australia

Establish headings for individual nationalities living in Australia in the composite form:

[qualifier designating country of origin] Australians (May Subd Geog)

e.g. Vietnamese Australians (May Subd Geog)

Do not hyphenate these headings.

Such headings represent the permanent residents of Australia, including naturalised citizens. For aliens living in Australia, students from abroad, etc., assign a heading of the type e.g. Japanese--Australia.

Reference pattern

Always provide the following references for nationality headings in Australia, e.g.

[Nationality] Australians (May Subd Geog)
450 [Nationality] Australians--Australia
450 New Australians
450 [Alternative nationality adjective] Australians
550 Ethnology--Australia
550 [Nationality]--Australia
551 Australia--Emigration and immigration
551 Australia--Population

e.g.
British Australians (May Subd Geog)
450 British Australians--Australia
450 New Australians
450 Anglo Australians
550 Ethnology--Australia
550 British--Australia
551 Australia--Emigration and immigration
551 Australia--Population

For information on nationalities in foreign countries including the United States see the Library of Congress Subject Cataloguing Manual H1919.5.

Aboriginal Australians and subdivisions

The following guidelines should be used for making additions to this heading:

Phrase headings

Follow the patterns under ethnic groups or under Aboriginal Australians LCSH. Do not use the 'as' form except where the alternative form would otherwise be clumsy or ambiguous (e.g. Aborigines, Australian, as consumers).

Scope notes

Provide scope notes in cases where the heading subdivision and another form of the heading are both valid, e.g. Art, Australian--Aboriginal artists

Here are entered works on art by Aboriginal Australian artists who have turned to non-traditional forms and materials under the influence of Western art. Works on Aboriginal Australian art in traditional forms and utilizing traditional materials are entered under Art, Aboriginal Australian.

Aboriginal Australian literature

Here are entered collections of works by Australian authors in Aboriginal languages. Collections of works in a specific Aboriginal language are entered under the corresponding heading for the literature. Collections of works by Aboriginal Australian authors in non-Aboriginal languages are entered under the specific non-Aboriginal literature with the subdivision Aboriginal authors, e.g. Australian literature--Aboriginal authors.

Aboriginal Australian poetry

Here are entered collections of poetry written by Aboriginal Australians in Aboriginal languages. Collections of poetry about Aboriginal Australians are entered under Aboriginal Australians--Poetry. Collections of poetry by Aboriginal Australian authors in non-Aboriginal languages are entered under the specific non-Aboriginal poetry with the subdivision Aboriginal authors, e.g. Australian poetry--Aboriginal authors.

Aboriginal Australians in art

Here are entered works about or collections of illustrations of Aboriginal Australians in art. Collections of portraits are entered under Aborigines, Australian--Portraits.

Aboriginal Tasmanians

The heading Aboriginal Australians serves as a pattern heading for Aboriginal Tasmanians.

Subdivisions

Valid subdivisions for Aboriginal Australians can be found under the list of free-floating subdivisions for Ethnic groups (H1103) of the Library of Congress Subject Cataloguing Manual. The list of most commonly used form and topical subdivisions (H1095) of the manual are also applicable. Cross-references listed under Ethnic groups should be used as pattern references when verifying Aboriginal Australian headings on Libraries Australia. If you have any questions please contact us.

Below is a list of previously approved ABN subdivisions which have been replaced by headings formulated in accordance with current LCSH policy.

Development policy for Australian subject headings

The future development of the Australian extension to LCSH should take account of the changing environment of Australian cataloguing. Australian libraries are obtaining their cataloguing data from a variety of sources (ANBD, overseas databases, library supplier databases) and they need to contain the cost of maintaining the authority files in their local systems. Accordingly, the development of the Australian extension to LCSH should follow these guidelines:

(a) Where a term already exists in LCSH, an equivalent Australian term may be adopted as a reference to the LCSH term. Australian terminology should not be substituted for synonymous LCSH terms.

(b) Australian subject headings which have previously been substituted for existing LCSH terms, should be reviewed in order to reduce the variations from LCSH. The review should consider the cost of converting back to standard LCSH, which may outweigh the savings of being consistent with LCSH.

(c) The Australian subject headings which have already been adopted, should be continuously monitored for opportunities to reduce the variation from LCSH.
