Summary
  • Two 17th century books, one, "Justinus. Trogi Pompeii Historiarum Philippicarum epitoma ..." signed by Isaac Newton and the other, " Bernhardi Vareni med. d. Geographia generalis, in qua affectiones generales telluris explicantur ..." possibly from Newton's library. Fifteen handwritten letters by 18th and 19th century scientists and physicians: John Abernethy (undated), Sir Joseph Banks (1817 and undated), Charles Darwin (undated), Sir Humphrey Davy (1812), Michael Faraday (1863), Sir William Herschel (1806), Thomas Henry Huxley (undated, 1879, 1852), Sir Richard Owen (1853), James Nasmyth (1840), Sir Hans Sloane (1710), Herbert Spencer (1892) and James Watt (1794). One document: portion of staff work (11 p.) in preparing an invasion of England in 1798 by a French army of 90,000.
Biography
  • Professor Osborne was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine,Univeristy of Melbourne, 1929-1938 and Professor Emeritus from 1938. He was a keen collector and had a large private library. In 1957 he donated to the Library some volumes of Americana and material relating to the French Revolution.
