Summary
  • International Maritime Organisation rules that took effect on Jul 6, 1993, mandate that tankers above 5,000 tons deadweight ordered after that date be double-hulled. However, the predicted last-minute rush by fleet owners to place orders did not materialize. Navix Line of Japan was the last company to order a single-hulled tanker, from Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Industry observers forecast that single-hulled tankers will be around for many years to come, and Japan's Ministry of Transport predicts that by 2004 50% of all tankers will still be single hulled.
