Summary
  • The market for mobile computing equipment and transmission services is expected to expand dramatically in Canada by the end of the century. In 1993, Canadian vendors reported over $1 billion in sales for mobile communications-related technologies and services. Two sectors especially well-poised for growth in Canada are the wireless LAN and digital cellular communications sectors. Wireless LAN vendors such as Switchworks Technologies offer mobile modems and communications software that integrate in-house corporate LANs with outside WAN services. Lotus Development Canada provides a similar service with its cc:Mail Mobile, which offers wireless hooks to in-house LANs and access to commercial E-mail service suppliers. In the digital cellular arena, some vendors are beginning to adopt the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) protocol. The protocol offers 19.2Kbps throughput rates and automatic error detection and data encryption. IBM offers a built-in CDPD modem and cellular phone option for its ThinkPad portable computer.
