Summary
  • Manufacturers have modified print servers that support numerous protocols to the requirements of enterprise networks, while fax servers remain unaltered and mostly LAN-centered. Multiple protocol print servers allow users comfortable access in an expanding heterogeneous environment. Users have grown tired of reclaiming hard copy output from printer servers that have become more distant as the size of LANs increase. Hardware manufacturers have produced internal and external print server adapters as a quicker, more flexible option. A recent study indicated a continuing trend toward increased printer accessibility as most printers are placed into networked configurations. HP, the leader in the printer and print server markets, included LocalTalk support and upgraded network operating system switching to keep pace with enterprise networking requirements. Fax server products tend to support work groups instead of networked configurations.
