Summary
  • Apple CEO Michael Spindler says that the Apple Newton MessagePad was misunderstood when it was released and that when he and former Apple CEO John Sculley talked about Newton as part of a multimedia future, they never intended for Newton to become that future alone. Spindler says that the company intended to emphasize Newton's different architecture from the traditional microcomputer and its basis on communications and mobility. He also said that although the computer is pen-based, with users pulling up menus and making memos with a pen, the Newton is meant to be communications-based computing, not pen-based computing. Spindler admits that sales of the Newton have been low but will not release specific figures and says that Apple and its partners are developing more mission-critical applications for mobile corporate users. He also expects Apple's OEM partners, including Motorola and Toshiba, to develop technology for the Newton.
