Summary
  • The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) continues to attract millions of visitors each year with its entertaining, hands-on exhibits that combine basic educational concepts with the latest multimedia technology. The museum, which opened in Oct 1992, includes a $6 million Omnimax theater for 70mm movies and a $2 million planetarium. Visitors can test aerodynamics in a wind tunnel on miniature cars they build themselves and step onto a special platform to experience an earthquake that measures 5.5 on the Richter scale. Users can draw on an electronic graphics pad and then project their work into the air, or operate a video camera by shining a spotlight on a satellite dish. The museum also develops travelling exhibits, including the popular $1.5 million 'Star Trek: Federation Science' exhibit, and rents them to other museums. The OMSI computer lab includes Macintoshes, Amigas, PCs and a Philips CD-i player, as well as more specialized equipment such as Vivid Effects' Mandala Virtual World virtual reality video system.
