Summary
  • Industry observers say the market for LAN-access products will double each year. Software and software-hardware products from three dozen LAN-access vendors are evaluated. Products can be divided into those that rely on a routed connection between a remote computer and a LAN server or gateway; those that use bridged connections; those that incorporate characteristics of both bridging and routing; and those that use older dial-up data-access and exchange techniques. These would include remote control, direct asynchronous terminal server connections or proprietary link-control communications. Pros and cons of bridging and routing are discussed. A product-comparison chart is provided.
