Summary
  • Novell Inc's NetWare network operating system (NOS) is popular among enterprise-wide networkers, but the 1994 Communications Week network managers' survey reveals that larger companies often prefer Unix. The survey shows that Unix made up more than one-third of NOS purchases from companies with revenues of $1 billion or more. A network administrator with a Canadian government agency points out that larger companies tend to have both the experience with and the need for Unix. He adds that systems administrators migrating applications from mainframe computers to LANs often relate best to Unix, and he says Unix is indicated because such circumstances often generate a need for powerful servers and industrial-strength applications.
