Summary
  • Johns Hopkins University's School of Medicine is experimenting with an ATM network that is being used for applications that involve treatment of children with congenital skull defects. The network is more than an ATM experiment and aims to resolve an actual problem. Corrective surgery involving children's cranial-facial deformities often begins before the age of two and continues for years, but over time, work done by a surgeon can be undone by a growth pattern associated with a particular abnormality. It is therefore crucial to know how growth patterns unfold and at what stage surgery will be most effective. Necessary data can be accumulated by collecting magnetic resonance imaging and computed axial tomography scans. At Johns Hopkins, an ATM network is feeding scans from the University of Maryland Medical Center into a database that will eventually become a national archive.
