Summary
  • US West will acquire two Atlanta, GA-based cable systems from the Robert M. Bass Group for $1.04 billion in stock and the assumption of $160 million in debt. The regional Bell company plans to invest an additional $300 million to upgrade cable lines to bring combined telephone and cable services to about 500,000 in the Atlanta area by the late 1990s. The acquisition would also make US West a direct competitor of another Bell company, BellSouth. This marks the second time a regional Bell company has invaded the local service carrier area of another. US West, however, faces a number of obstacles before it can even begin offering interactive video services. Industry analysts report that the state of Georgia has yet to revamp many of its telecommunications rules, meaning that it could take four years for US West to gain the necessary approvals to initiate the new phone/cable services.
