Summary
  • WilTel Communications is scheduled to present its multirate ISDN service, the first long distance service that allows customers to dial up the required bandwidth for videoconferencing, LAN interconnect and other high-speed transmissions. The carrier's CustomOne Multirate ISDN service also features a switched data service at no additional cost. The new service allows customers to dial up the bandwidth in degrees of 64 Kbps up to 1.5 Mbps. The network does the synchronization work that used to be handled by an inverse multiplexor. WilTel's service will be available in a limited number of cities including St. Louis; Topeka, KS; Wichita, KS; Kansas City, KS; Dallas; Kansas City, MO; and Little Rock, AR. Multirate ISDN employs devices on the carrier network to synchronize circuits, negating the need for switched data services and inverse multiplexing, which can cost from $3,500 to $10,000 per site. Additionally, WilTel will begin its switched 56/‚Äč64-Kbps data services, available Jul 1994 in 25 major metropolitan areas.
