Summary
  • The introduction of OLE custom controls (OCX) does not necessarily mean the end of Visual Basic custom controls (VBX). Users have proved that VBXs are useful over the past three years and they will still be useful in the future. There are many programming environments that still support VBX and will continue to do so. There would not be so many VBXs on the market if the controls were going to become obsolete. The release of OCX is good because it gives developers the chance to develop OLE-based technology and create new markets. OCXs are also a big improvement on VBXs primarily because of widespread use and popularity. OCXs also have drawbacks in speed, compatibility and size. The size problem is evident when a VBX is converted to an OCX and the VBX consumes just 30K of space while the OCX consumes 90K. Developers will embrace OCX but will also continue to develop VBX-based solutions.
