Summary
  • Prolinear Corp's $995 PalmBook 386 subnotebook computer weighs just 1.2 pounds with batteries and measures only 9.5 by 4.6 by 1.25 inches. The machine provides two PCMCIA Type II memory/peripheral slots, an AMD 386SX processor, Microsoft Works 2.0, and a full-featured PIM in ROM. The 7.5-inch nonbacklit LCD display has a resolution of 640 by 200 pixels; the 80-column, 25-row CGA screen emulates 16 gray levels. The 80-key AT-style keyboard uses keys about 80 percent the size of normal keys, and the function keys are half-size and very close to the number keys; the spacebar is only half as wide as usual, and the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys are on the lower left. The PalmBook 386 is a great improvement over the first generation of palmtops in terms of processor speed and memory capacity, but it is close in price to HP's 386-based OmniBook and Gateway's HandBook, although those machines weigh about twice as much.
