Summary
  • Five PCMCIA LAN adapter cards are tested: DLink Systems' $375 PCMCIA Ethernet Card, IBM's $225 Ethernet Credit Card Adapter II, Megahertz' $259 PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter, New Media's PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter ($199 for 10Base-T and $299 for 10Base2), and Socket Communications' $299 Ethernet adapter ($249 for 10Base-T only). Selecting a PCMCIA LAN adapter requires consideration of the number of networks a card supports, such as NetWare, LAN Manager, and LANtastic, and the network's cabling, such as Ethernet, Token Ring, and ARCnet. The cards were tested on a Toshiba T4600C notebook computer on an Ethernet-based Novell NetWare network; they all had couplers for connecting to coaxial or 10Base2 cabling. All five cards were installed and operated, but PCMCIA technology for networking still requires some enhancing. All network adapter card installations require prior knowledge of networking to make them work. The IBM and Megahertz cards were the most reliable and easiest to install; they also support all networks.
