Summary
  • The DOS Requester has more functionality and flexibility than the DOS shell, offers better and more modular memory management, and has been designated by Novell as the client software of the future. The program was developed in part because the DOS shell only supported bindery-based servers, and NetWare 4.x requires that clients have a way to perform directory service functions. The Virtual Loadable Module (VLM) implementation in the DOS Requester lets specific VLMs be loaded or not loaded depending on the user's NET.CFG file, which lets users specify exactly which functions they want to include in their client software. The DOS Requester also provides packet-burst functionality and supports the Large Internetwork Packet (LIP). DOS Requester installation files, the installation process, troubleshooting, and new features in the program are described.
