Summary
  • Tops Appliance City Inc is pulling the plug on its brash Topsy mascot, whose antics in broadcast commercials included blowing up rivals with TNT and snarling 'Fugedaboudit!,' cartoonish Brooklynese for 'Forget about it!' A Tops advertising VP says Topsy's mayhem helped cut through the clutter but concedes that it did not appeal to younger shoppers. To reach Generation X, Tops must adopt a non-patronizing broadcast campaign shorn of gimmicks. In Apr 1994, Tops debuted a radio campaign that features grunge and other music that fits the station's format. Tops aims its radio campaign at the 18-to-30-year-old group, TV at the 25-to-50 demographic and print at those older than 35. Tops will soon roll out a TV campaign that emphasizes brand-name products, large product selection and attractive store displays.
