Summary
  • Acquisition of music, video and other content is rapidly becoming too costly for small multimedia firms, as owners of those properties move to protect their electronic-media rights. At the same time, acquisition of rights is becoming less arduous, as content-providers grow better educated about developers' needs. Developers often find themselves forced to sign several contracts to secure one property. For example, separate contracts may be needed for the video and music content of a film clip. Developers must proceed carefully, using as much public-domain content as possible and independently checking the underlying rights of images they procure from image-stock houses. Developers also need to reassure rights-holders that they will retain the rights to their properties. Determining what properties are in the public domain can be difficult, as there is no centralized clearing house on that subject.
