Summary
  • Electronic publishing is slowly replacing the use of paper media as e-mail and CD-ROM use grow in popularity. Users like electronic means of publishing because it is faster, more flexible and better for the environment. Many companies are beginning to rely on electronic publishing because they are becoming overwhelmed with paper files and electronic storage saves time and space. It is unclear how much paper electronic publishing will be able to replace. Many people have become used to exchanging messages over electronic networks but resist the idea of reading entire documents on-line. Many companies that are not traditionally publishers, such as political and educational organizations, are using CD-ROMs to release information to consumers. It is estimated that half of all the CD-ROMs created in 1993 were produced for sale rather than for internal use.
