Summary
  • Licensed characters are appearing increasingly in entertainment software as publishers realize that licensed characters give them an edge in the market by increasing consumer recognition. Companies are confident about developing games based on a license when retailers are confident that a licensed name will sell, even when a royalty has to be paid to the license owner. LucasArts Entertainment uses characters from its sister company, LucasFilms; two of its best-selling titles, X-Wing and Rebel Assault, are based on the 'Star Wars' movie series. Electronic Arts Inc VP of Creative Development Don Traeger says the company's EA*Sports division relies on licensed characters and league names to give its games realistic qualities. Acclaim Entertainment Chmn and CEO Greg Fischbach says only a few of the games now being developed by the company will receive the marketing support of its big hits, Mortal Combat and NBA Jams.
