Summary
  • Nintendo and Sega have dominated the video game industry for years, but Nintendo's Super NES and Sega's Genesis systems are showing age, and new systems are ready to challenge their lead. Atari's $249 Jaguar may be the most technologically sophisticated of currently available game systems; its 64-bit processor lets Atari claim the smoothest scrolling and fastest action. JVC's X'Eye combines a double-speed CD-ROM drive and a Sega CD system; it can play audio CDs as well as CD+G, and it supports both Sega Genesis cartridges and CD-ROM games. Nintendo's new 64-bit system may provide a virtual environment for the game player and the best game play available. Panasonic's Real Interactive Multiplayer is based on the 3DO hardware platform; it uses a double-speed CD-ROM drive and features an optional MPEG module. Also described are the Philips CD-I system, Pioneer LaserActive LaserDisc-based system, Sega Genesis CDX, and TTI Duo.
