Summary
  • The number of people subscribing to online services is expected to increase from 4 million in 1994 to more than 16 million by 1997, according to Dataquest Inc, which indicates that more people may be comfortable with buying online. Dataquest analyst Lisa Thorell says merchandising online will be the way to hold on to sophisticated computer users; she expects product suppliers of all types to use the low-cost medium of online shopping, whether through the Internet Shopping Mall or CompuServe's Electronic Mall. CompuServe charges online merchants a one-time fee of about $20,000 and takes a 2 percent commission of all sales; it hosts 135 electronic merchants and had an 80 percent increase in sales since 1993, and its average individual purchase increased to $71. Prodigy users can buy software through its merchant partners or through its Download Superstore. Also described is the Desktop Channel, a division of NECX Inc that sells about 20,000 products from 800 different vendors online.
