Summary
  • The Plug and Play specification for PC systems and add-in cards is designed to let cards configure automatically when inserted in a CPU, but six months after Intel released the first versions of development kits, only a few Plug and Play machines have arrived. Plug and Play Association Co-Chmn Leonard Magnuson says the PC industry is two or three months behind where the group had hoped it would be in announcing Plug and Play systems; the association is headed by Intel and Microsoft and is working to develop Plug and Play standards. Intel's updated Plug and Play development kits delivered in late May 1994 are designed to allow direct upgrade paths to the future release of Windows, known widely as Chicago; many hardware vendors appear to be bypassing DOS and current Windows versions in favor of Chicago and the next generation of IBM PC Co's OS/2.
