Summary
  • Computer Associates International Inc (CA) forms a new division to market its consumer product line, following similar groups being formed at CA rivals Microsoft, WordPerfect, and Micrografx. The new division will use its own name and logo to promote and expand the Simply software series, which now includes Kiplinger's CA-Simply Money and CA-Simply Tax. CA gave away Simply Money to more than 1 million consumers in the fall of 1993, which is expected to help channel upgrade sales and consumer brand recognition; version 2.0 is scheduled to ship in the retail channel in June 1994. CA affiliate-label partner SoftKey International Inc distributes a CA tax title, but CA will develop its own 'lifestyle' products, which are loosely defined as personal productivity and entertainment products that enhance lifestyle. SoftKey and CA are reportedly discussing a new arrangement, although both companies deny knowledge of possible consolidation or product-line acquisition negotiations.
