Summary
  • Industry analysts report that large computer manufacturers such as IBM and HP are expected to report sales and earnings growth in the first half of 1994, but they caution that part of this growth is the result of internal cost-cutting measures. Industry leader IBM is expected to report net income of 75 cents per share for its 2nd qtr, compared to a net loss of $14.02 per share for the same period in 1993. IBM's results were largely fueled by cost-cutting programs, although sales of the company's PC products continue to rise. The second largest computer manufacturer, HP, also continues to reap profits in the PC sector. HP is expected to report net income of $1.27 per share for its 3rd qtr ending Jul 31, 1994, compared to $1.06 for the same period a year earlier. Rival manufacturer DEC continues to be plagued by low sales and high operating costs. The company is expected to report a loss of 92 cents per share for its 4th qtr ended Jun 30, 1994, compared to a gain of 85 cents per share a year earlier.
