Summary
  • Four of the seven regional Bell operating companies have filed a motion urging US District Court Judge Harold H. Greene to give up his oversight responsibilities in connection with the 1984 split-up of the AT&T telephone monopoly. The motion was filed by Bell Atlantic, Southwestern Bell, BellSouth and Nynex and seeks to lift current restrictions placed on the Bells by the 1984 consent decree. If successful in their efforts, the Baby Bells would no longer be prohibited from providing long-distance carrier services or from manufacturing telephones and switching devices. The Bells argue that such restrictions are no longer necessary for antitrust purposes because the Bells face increasing competition from foreign competitors and cable-TV conglomerates planning interactive services. Analysts do not believe the Bells expect Greene to willingly relinquish his oversight role, but instead, are setting the stage for future appeals. Greene has opposed a series of waiver requests initiated by the Bells over the 1984-94 period.
