Summary
  • In 1999, Trinidad Cement Limited Group (TCL) acquired Caribbean Cement Company Limited (CCCL), a cement company of Jamaica, with an investment of TT$182mn. After the acquisition of CCCL, TCC has been criticized because at the moment of the acquisition CCCL shares were trading at J$2 and TCL paid J$6.25. TCC is covering a CCCL debt of TT$692mn with a TT$9mn monthly payment, and its 1999 financial statement reported a fall in profits by 18% due to the acquisition of CCCL. TCL has defended the purchase claiming that the Jamaican company has all the numbers to become a profitable company and re-pay the investment carried out in 1999. On the other hand, TCC is looking to expand his distribution department and lowering packaging and freight costs with the construction of stockrooms where the cement could be packed and shipped with an investment between US$2mn and US$3mn each. The company is considering countries with a yearly consumption of at least 50,000 tonnes. TLC has considered the installation of an aluminium plant at Claxton Bay, with new investments in order to expand its interests. Currently, TCL is analysing possible acquisitions in Northern Brazil, Central America, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
