Summary
  • The Employment Relations Act 1999 comes onto the statute on 1 May 2000 and this means that if half the workforce decides it wants a union then the management has to allow one to be set up and recognised. Bosses will have to consult with a Works Council if they employ 1,000 staff in one country and have 150 staff in another. The value of being in a union is that it can negotiate on issues such as job security, pay increases and good pension arrangements.
