Summary
  • Only 6% of rape cases ended with a conviction in 1999 compared to 24% in 1985. However, some rape cases are worse than others and having unwanted sex with a boyfriend is much less terrifying than being faced with an armed stranger in the dark. Juries know that the sentence for rape is five years so they are likely to acquit a man who forces sex on his girlfriend. Copying the Canadian model which has three categories of rape and various sentencing options would result in more convictions.
