Summary
  • There has been a decline in the number of people joining the police service and there are 1,000 less in 2000 than in 1999. People are leaving the service in such large numbers that the numbers recruited cannot make up the shortfall. The deficit means that some areas cannot do their job properly and are having to bring in police from other areas to help with crowd control. Police are also reluctant to tackle some problems because they know there is ineffective back up available. Recruitment is forecast to continue to decline.
