Summary
  • Representatives from IBM, Patton Design and Compaq offer their insights on microcomputer designs of the future. IBM officials believe users may be able to use personal communicators in a variety of new ways. Such devices could be used to call up physicians, who could then check the user's medical condition via a monitor attached to the user's watch. If treatment was warranted, prescriptions could be transmitted back to the user over a wireless global network. Patton Design's founder, Doug Patton, thinks that computer technology will be incorporated in a number of office devices ranging from interactive computer conference tables to small computer 'filing cabinets,' which would connect to outside databases. Compaq's VP of Corporate Development, Bob Stearns, envisions a microcomputer that would be designed as a headset with goggles. An attached mouthpiece would support voice input and goggles would function as high-tech video monitors.
