Summary
  • Inadequate computer training programs hinder employees from reaping the full benefits of their corporate computer systems. Studies show that although 90% of employees have microcomputers available to them, over one third lack the requisite skills to use such systems. Some companies eschew formal computer training courses for their employees because they believe such courses are too costly and time-consuming. As a result, many employees learn computer skills from their peers and are often unaware of useful macros or other program shortcuts. In-house help lines are one way to provide informal training to corporate users. Such help lines, however, are often staffed by technicians who are ill-prepared to deal with novice users. Use of outside trainers is another option. The outside computer consulting and training market grew to $3.2 billion in 1992 and is expected to expand 17% per year through 1997.
