Summary
  • Respondents to Systems and Network Integration magazine's 1992 survey of systems integrators expect microcomputers and workstations to continue to coexist on the desktop, with microcomputers continuing to hold a slight edge, for the foreseeable future despite declining workstation prices. Integrators say that the lower-priced workstations do not offer full functionality and also note that microcomputer performance is steadily increasing. Workstations offer better hardware variety, but microcomputers offer a far broader software base. In order of importance, respondents named the following products as important to their business: Intel 80386/80486-based microcomputers, microcomputer servers, workstations, laptop/notebook computers, RISC-based servers/workstations, superservers, minicomputers, Macintosh microcomputers and pen-based computers.
