Summary
  • Responses to Systems and Network Integration magazine's 1992 integrator survey show that the Unix environment ranks just behind the MS-DOS operating system and Microsoft Corp's Windows graphical user interface (GUI) in importance to integrators' business. Yet while the average rating on a scale of one to 10, with 10 signifying 'very important,' was 6.31, individual ratings ranged from 7.5 for large integrators to 5.7 for integrators with annual income under $5 million. Many integrators are reluctant to get involved with Unix because of the environment's complexity and because of the lack of off-the-shelf Unix solutions. Those integrators willing to brave the rigors of Unix can find major business opportunities in that very complexity.
