Summary
  • Computer systems integrators responding to Systems and Network Integration magazine's 1992 integrator survey rank Microsoft Corp's Windows graphical user interface (GUI) second only to the MS-DOS operating system in terms of its importance to their business, but many are unhappy with Windows' technical aspects. Among the main complaints are a lack of stability and the difficulty of developing Windows-based applications. The difficulty of keeping up with the pace of Microsoft's changes to Windows also was cited by some as a major irritant. Version 3.1 of Windows, scheduled to begin shipment in late Mar 1992, is expected to address many of these issues, but many integrators feel a fully reliable Windows will not arrive until Microsoft releases the 32-bit Windows NT. Some suggestions for using Windows 3.0 and 3.1 effectively are offered.
