Summary
  • The general optimism expressed by systems integrators responding to a Systems and Network Integration magazine survey is reflected in their 1992 hiring plans. A mere seven percent of those responding expect to reduce staff over the coming year, and another 36 percent expect staffing levels to remain static. More surprisingly, 57 percent of respondents report they expect to increase staff by 40 percent on average. These plans bridge the full range of integrators; in some cases a 40 percent increase may mean no more than two or three positions, but the overall trend is nevertheless significant. One factor underlying the movement is a need to add new skill sets to existing staff capabilities; among the skills most in demand, survey respondents rate software development skills as the hardest to find, followed closely by project management, systems engineering, consulting, executive management, sales/marketing, customer training and administration.
