In 1950 Frank Hardy was arrested, jailed and charged with criminal libel for writing "Power without glory". Against a background of fear and hysteria the defence of Frank Hardy became caught up in a wider struggle. "The hard way" tells of two men's battle to write a book: how it was conceived, how it was secretly written, printed and distributed, and how Hardy was victimized and punished.
