Summary
  • The Grid Compass transportable computer is now available in the United Kingdom for 5,195 pounds. The machine has a fold-down flat electroluminescent display that supports up to twenty-four lines of text with eighty characters-per line. The bubble memory is non-volatile and a floppy disk drive is available for additional memory requirements. A local area network called Grid Server is also available and allows up to forty-four Grids to share peripherals. An auto-dial modem can be used to access databases and Grid Systems has a full set of application software packages for business users that can be bundled with the Grid operating system. Although not functionally compatible with the IBM PC, the Grid Compass does offer file compatibility. The ten-pound, compact Grid Compass is a quality machine but the technology that makes it so expensive should be available at a lower price in the near future. Photographs of the Grid Compass and a list of hardware specifications are included.
