Disease Management Approaches to Asthma: What Does it Mean for the Patient?
Despite an increased understanding of the pathophysiology of asthma and effective therapies, the prevalence, morbidity and mortality of asthma have risen dramatically over the last 2 decades. Asthma disease state management (ADSM) programmes provide managed care with a viable alternative to traditional quality assurance measures, through the integration of multiple components of the healthcare delivery system. This coordinated approach has been shown to improve clinical outcomes and increase patient satisfaction. Although the majority of patients believe that there is a benefit from participation, others may reject ADSM programmes. Strategies for improving patient acceptance of ADSM interventions are targeted at removal of obstacles to care, treatment of underlying psychiatric disease or substance abuse and the establishment of a partnership with their provider.
