Notes
  • Exterior West Faade from the West; South Tower (Upper Part); The South Tower (called the clocher vieux or "old bell-tower") is 349 feet six inches high. The spire is 148 feet high. It was started around 1110 and completed c. 1170. Unlike the North Tower, it was built entirely in masonry. Its appearance has remained fundamentally the same, though it was repaired in 1395, 1683, and 1753-1. In 1836, the belfry destroyed in a fire. ; Mass reports that there is an inscription on the soffit of the topmost window on the north side. It reads "Harmanus, 1164 N.D.D"; Mass suggests that Harmanus was the magister operum.(See Mass, pp. 40-1)
