  • The papers in MS 9354 include personal and professional correspondence, drafts and typescripts of poetry, copies of articles, reviews, talks, lectures, manuscripts, writing, notes, cuttings and reports relating to Philip Mead's career as a poet, writer, editor, lecturer, teacher and literary reviewer. Correspondents include Kevin Hart, Les Murray, Judith Rodriguez, Alec Bolton, David Brooks, Andrew Sant, Geoff Page, John Tranter, R.A. Simpson, A.D. Hope, Tom Shapcott and Chris Wallace-Crabbe (16 boxes).
  • The Acc04.134 instalment comprises papers covering the period 1986-2004 and includes personal and professional correspondence, printouts of about 630 e-mails, papers relating to conferences and seminars, articles, reviews, references and papers by Mead, other writings by Mead, papers relating to Mead's co-editorship of the literary magazine RePublica, and manuscripts and drafts by others sent to Mead. There is some poetry by Mead, and titles include Hearts of the world, On this day she begins her fortieth year, Adult concepts, Melbourne or the bush, Postmodern love, Tell me everything and Cinema point. The major correspondents are Judith Rodriguez, John Tranter, John Barnes, Alan Gould, George Papaellinas, John Lucas, Amanda Lohrey and Ann Vickery (1 carton, 5 A3 cartons).
Biography
  • Teacher, editor, literary reviewer, writer, poet and academic. Philip Stirling Mead was born in Brisbane in 1953. He graduated as a Master of Arts at La Trobe University and, in 1980, obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne. He worked as a teacher and tutor in English, and was senior lecturer in English at the University of Tasmania from 1995 to 2009, prior to his appointment as the inaugural chair in Australian literature at the University of Western Australia. During the 1970s Mead was involved in establishing the journal, Canberra poetry. He was poetry editor for Meanjin, 1987-1994, and has been co-editor of the Journal of the Association for the Study of Australian literature. As a poet, Mead has published Songs from another country (1975), The spring-mire: poems (1982), and This river is in the south (1984). He is the author of Networked language: culture &​ history in Australian poetry (2008) and has edited and introduced literary and cultural studies.
