Summary
There is a belief that English language students need to be exposed to authentic or natural language, and that the use of such language requires a focus on meaning and purpose rather than form. A challenge to the first belief questions the meaning of such terms and whether reproducing the language acquisition of children in adults is desirable. It is also argued that much authentic or natural language is concentrated on form and fiction rather than meaning and reality.
