Western Australia. Education Department
Adolescents.; Middle school education - United States - Bibliography.; Australia
Much of the published research into middle schooling has been undertaken in the United States of America. Until recently, this research has been carried out mainly by advocates of middle schooling and restricted to comparatively small and localised samples of students, teachers, principals and parents. North American studies may not necessarily transfer well to Australian settings. In addition to national and cultural differences, there are significant structural differences. In particular, American middle school reforms are changing the character of a three-tier school system, restructuring existing junior high schools into middle schools. In Australia, middle school reforms are being introduced in the context of a two-tier system of separate primary and secondary schools. This annotated bibliography provides an introduction to the Australian and American middle school literature. The Overview Table lists 23 key resources and identifies some of the issues dealt with in each article or report. Following the Table, the resources are listed in alphabetical order with full references, together with a summary of the contents. The final section of this report suggests other useful resources for those interested in middle schooling, including journals, reports, web sites and an extended bibliography. [Introduction]
