Summary
The studies here investigate the scope and complexity of the problems in students' transition from secondary to tertiary education. The national scale of these problems is documented and demonstrate that initial student experiences of tertiary teaching and learning continue to affect students' success. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the key factors affecting students' transition experiences and their performance in the first year of tertiary study is then undertaken. Finally a system-wide analysis shows that commencing students are a diverse group, and that diffrent universities have student bodies with quite different characteristics.
