Summary
The automatic teller machine (ATM) market will heat up as a result of growth in point-of-sale applications. Roughly 35,000 point-of-sale terminals have been installed for retail use with about 58 percent used in specialty stores and filling stations. Around 400,000 point-of-sale machines are projected to be connected in the US by 1991. User acceptance may be a prohibiting factor. Manufacturers are working on a next generation of electronic fund-transfer machines that will offer multiple services to consumers.
